Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a medieval town that looks like something out of a storybook. It is known for having the longest city walls in all of Europe. The oldest sections of the wall were built by the Romans in the 1st Century AD.

Charlemagne once set siege to the settlement in the 9th century, only to be outdone by one Dame Carcas, a clever woman who boldly fed the last of the city's wheat to a pig in full view of the conqueror; Charlemagne, thinking this indicated endless food supplies, promptly decamped, and the townsfolk named the city after her!
